CABBS Mini-Skiff Boatbuilding Plans Available

When people saw the CABBS Mini-Skiff at our 2010 Cleveland boat show booth, the most common question was, "how can I build one?"

Hank Vincenti went to work and along with Paula Smith drafted a set of plans for this seven foot boat for kids built by George Miller. The plans are free and present everything you need to know to build this handsome craft. More …

Fifteen Year-old Megan Wins Top Boatbuilding Honor

This year's winner of the CABBS Freeman-Turner trophy for excellence in amateur boatbuilding is Megan, a high-school sophomore and familiar face to many CABBS members. Her 11 ft. kayak built on an okoume and ash frame and covered in a #10 duck canvas skin is finished out in a color called Very Berry. The inspiration for the color came during construction when she draped the roughly cut canvas deck cloth over the frame. The overhanging edge of the cloth looked to her like the top crust of a pie peeled from the dough board and laid on a berry filled pie shell.

The boat will first touch water this spring.

Megan started in boatbuilding at age four, helping her dad build a small skiff. As dad built more and bigger boats, Megan was right there to help out, learn, and enjoy the boats upon completion. She regrets dad had to sell any of them but that is what provided the money for the next exciting boatbuilding project.

Through its vivid color and excellent craftsmanship, this boat speaks strongly of the accomplishments of this young woman and the bright future ahead of her.
