Guest Speaker: Kevin MacRitchie, Boatbuilder

Building LEARNING CURVE

When Kevin MacRitchie, a suburban east side firefighter, entered retirement he thought building a boat would be a great way to fill his time. But before he got started he had to first redo the kitchen and build new kitchen cabinets to keep his wife happy. Then he got underway in his two car garage and woodshop building the second boat he ever attempted, a 24' X 8' cat ketch designed by Karl Stambaugh.

Working primarily with meranti plywood, oak, and poplar, he used three coats of epoxy on all wood surfaces and covered the hull in two layers of fiberglass cloth set in epoxy. Fasteners are bronze and the masts are solid, straight grained douglas fir. He designed a unique router jig for beveling the edge of the doubled half-inch bottom panels along the chine.

Midway through the three year build, he faced a peculiar problem when he completed the deck house. He gave his wife the honor of being the first to sit in the new cabin space. She leaned back on the settee and immediate hit her head on the low sloping roof. That wouldn't do for marital peace so he set about raising the deckhouse. He drew a line around the perimeter of the cabin approximately six inches off the deck . He carefully sawed through the entire cabin structure, raised it approximately four inches , filled in the walls with new wood and glued it all back together.

Launched on September 11, 2010, Kevin sails LEARNING CURVE on Pymatuning Reservoir. He admits she is not the best going to weather but on other points of sail she can really get up and run. He hopes to trailer her to Chesapeake Bay someday. He'd love to sail up to Karl Stambaugh's dock and show him first-hand how beautifully his Catbird design turned out.
