CABBS at the Cleveland Boat

and Waterfront Lifestyle Expo

The CABBS display at the Cleveland Boat Show featured five beautiful wooden boats and a live construction area where boatbuilders whose ages ran in single digits could try their hand at building a one-foot sloop.

Jim Stump did an excellent just-in-time paint job to dress his 15 ft 2in. Kingston Cruiser-Camper for public display. The interior is still under construction and Jim hopes to complete the boat by late spring.

Looking very trim, Joe Horvath's Bateau C-12 is ready for its first full season on the water. This impeccably finished boat uses a lug sail rig copied from a San Francisco Pelican. The Rocky River sail loft of Elvstrom-Sobstad, cut the sails for both Joe Horvath's and Jim Stumpf's boat.

Hank Vicenty displayed his Doug Hylan designed pea pod, SWEET PEA. Sporting a sprit sail rig, this classic boat features a unique kick-up rudder designed by Hank.

Looking like a pre-historic life form
climbing from the sea, Jeff Gifford's and son James' 12'ft catboat gave show goers an in-progress glimpse of stitch and glue construction. The duo is working from Dynamite Payson's book, Build the Instant Catboat to produce the Phil Bolger Bobcat design.

Ric Altfather's Chesapeake 17 kayak
is an outstanding example of woodworking skill. Ric worked from plans by Chesapeake Light Craft to produce this superbly finished, 38.5 lb. beauty. She seems just too pretty for the abuse of mud, sandy landings and the occasional rock scrape.

The Kids Boatbuilding Program

Under the watchful eyes of Paula Smith, Ric Altfather, and other CABBS members, young boatbuilders assembled nearly 300 kit boats. This popular activity gave kids a hands-on experience building a small sloop. CABBS members cut out the parts from materials donated by Hartville Lumber and Elvstrom-Sobstad Sailmakers. The youngsters (of all ages) did the rest.
