CABBS at the 2005
Cleveland Mid-America Boat Show
Spotlight on CABBS
This year, CABBS made it onto the TV news. Fox 8 News' TV personality Little John taped a four minute segment for the morning news show that featured Gary and Jesse Marr's hydroplane, Joe Horvath's pirogue, and Jim Stumpf and Joe Horvath's kayak. For those who didn't catch the broadcast, Jim will have a tape of it to show at the February meeting.
Something for the Kids
CABBS members, led by Hank Vincenti produced over 200 model paddle boat kits for kids to assemble at the CABBS booth. Hank, Paula Smith and others supervised the activity which ran primarily on the weekend days. The kits were free but many participants were grateful and we received over $300 in donations as a thank you.
CABBS Members Display Seven Boats
Seven boats built by CABBS members were on display in the CABBS booth during the boat show running January 14- 23. The boats demonstrated a wide range of boating interests as well as the unique skills and inventiveness of each builder.
Bobcat 8 Hydroplane
Length: 8'
Built by Gary and
Jesse Marr
This father and son team displayed their work-in-progress. Jesse spent many hours working on the boat at the show to provide a live boatbuilding demonstration. The little speeder is capable of hitting 25 mph with a 10 horsepower engine.
Pirogue
Length: 16'
Beam: 3'3”
Designer: Phil Bolger
Built by Joe Horvath
Joe built his pirogue to be used for paddling. Standout details include beautiful craftsmanship, handsome finishwork and a non-slip finished sole.
Little Gem
Length: 11'11”
Beam: 5'3”
Design: C-12 by Bateau
Built by Scott Widmier
This beamy design not only holds Scott's family but it is a quick little boat. Scott added a few innovations of his own: under-seat slide out storage and a forward thwart just inches off the bottom with fold-down backrests.
Kayak
Length: 15'
Beam: 34”
Design: Planford Bell PDK 22
Built by Jim Stumpf and
Joe Horvath
Jim and Joe built two of these kayaks as the live boatbuilding demonstration at the 2004 boat show. They sport a canvas skin over a framework made of MDO plywood frames and poplar stringers.
Calypsee
Length: 13'5”
Beam: 54”
Designed and built by John Blazy
Electrically powered by a 65 lb. Thrust Minn Kota Maxxum powerplant, Calypsee can do five knots. Going slow is the whole point since the lexan viewing ports in the bow and another along the keel give passengers a window on fish and other sights of the underwater world.
Firefly 18
Length: 18'
Designed by Ken Bassett
Built by Tim Chambers
A bright finished boat gives you no place to hide flaws. And there appeared to be none. This sliding seat, recreational rowing craft exhibited excellence in construction and finish.
Rubber Ducky
Length 26”
Beam 16”
Built by George Miller
George added the figurehead to the bow of this inner tube craft to emphasize its namesake. When winter comes, one can simply unbelt the inner tube from the frame and use it for tubing down a snow covered hill. Can your boat do that?
