December 6, 2003 Meeting Presentation
Tour of Tartan and C&C Yachts
Construction Facility
Fairport Harbor, OH
A standing room only crowd of CABBS members and guests crowded into the Tartan/C&C conference room to hear customer service representative, Jim Egensperger, explain the fiberglass construction techniques used in their yachts. He used many actual samples of fiberglass layers and core sandwiches to explain
what makes their hulls exceptionally strong. Each hull is hand layered, then vacuum bagged to use atmospheric pressure to compress the layers. The hull is wheeled into a giant oven where it is baked for eight hours to insure a full cure of the resin.
Later, in the work area, he pointed out mold features and layering techniques as personnel worked on glassing a deck panel.
A tour of the woodshop area demonstrated the craftsmanship and many hidden features that go into the fine cherry cabinetry and interiors.
Work scaffolds around the yachts provided an excellent vantage point to see the wiring systems and interior components that are completed before the deck is installed.
The finished yacht is joined to its fin keel and painted. It is then shipped within
hours of its completion.
Some CABBS member were looking for the Tartan Factory Outlet Store where a few scratch and dent boats might be had for a song. Unfortunately they were disappointed.
The group adjourned to Grandon?s Restaurant across from the Fairport Harbor Lighthouse Museum, for lunch and conversation.
