November 9, 2003 Meeting Presentation

Gary Peters Presentation

Gary started his presentation by stating that his usual presentation is a two-hour class on meteorology for boaters but since we lacked the time for that he'd talk about his maritime career. And what a diverse career he has had.

He grew up in the E. 152 nd area near the lake. It seems boats, fish, and the Great Lakes got into his blood at an early age. He went on to mention many of his work experiences which included:

ore boat seaman, fish hatchery worker at Put-In-Bay, environmental activist and a co-founder of Great Lakes United, business manager of a tow boat company, founder of Erie Shores Sailing School, a teacher of classes on cruising the Erie Canal and maritime law for boaters, a commissioning captain for Tartan Yachts, a Great Lakes commercial fisherman, a pilot for a Russian vessel touring the Great Lakes and Mississippi River, and a consultant to a Russian fish hatchery project in St. Petersburg, Russia. Somewhere along the way he also worked for Great Lakes Towing, Cleveland Prop, the Mentor Lagoons Park, and Parma Marine.

Here were enough experiences for one lifetime yet Gary is in his forties and still has unfulfilled dreams. He would like to develop an environmental education boat for the Great Lakes. With his experience and government connections, he just might make it happen.

Jim Rendt's Little Dubber

Jim Rendt showed his Little Dubber, a 7.5 ft, stitch-n-glue kayak made from 1/8inch ply panels and trimmed out in mahogany . The topsides are finished bright. The area below the waterline is coated with Jim's personal recipe of epoxy, aluminum powder, and graphite. Power is a double-bladed paddle. Jim's wife and kids claim it tracks and paddles as well as one of their stubby polyethylene store-bought kayaks.

This finely crafted boat with its curious shape is sure to be a conversation piece wherever it goes.

More on Little Dubber.
